Limited Edition Richard Mille RM 53-01 Tourbillon Pablo Mac Donough

Introduction

Never change a winning horse, at least that’s what Richard Mille was thinking with its second polo inspired timepiece, the new RM 53-01 Tourbillon Pablo Mac Donough. While Richard Mille’s latest flagship does not reinvent the wheel it brings together some of the brands best innovations to make for one seriously impressive watch.

Cable suspension system

The centrepiece of the attention on the RM-53-01 is a cable suspension system for the movement. We have seen the likes of this before in watches like the RM 56-02 and the RM 27-01, but this is so far my favourite iteration of this complication. The carefully calibrated cables have an unbelievably thin diameter of 0.27 mm. These are held on 10 pulleys in the movement to provide shock absorption for up to 5,000 g.

The Case

Unlike their previous Pablo Mac Donough watch from 2012 this timepiece comes with a much more classical case, at least for Richard Mille standards, made out of TPT Carbon in the tonneau shape. This will help give the watch a wider appeal, or at least one wide enough for a limited edition of 30 pieces.

Cool Specs

Other gadgets include a torque limiting crown which prevents overwinding, something you really want to avoid with a watch in this price bracket.

To protect from the impact of balls in the case that you do actually take this watch on the polo field Richard Mille has fitted the watch with what they call a crystal shield.

Inspired by automotive glass it is a sandwich of sapphire crystals in between of which is a polyvinyl sheet. All that is laminated in an antireflective film to grant perfect transparency and a better shock resistance.

With the cables spreading through the watch like a delicate spiderweb and a striking baby blue bracelet the new RM 53-01 is a sight to behold, and definitely not to be forgotten in the near future.
