Sequential serials
Numeric sequences can indicate an approximate production year, although the mid-century reset creates overlapping numbers.

Introduced around 2009–2010. Cannot be reliably dated from the serial alone.
Collector perspective
A serial can establish a likely production period. The reference, dial, bezel, bracelet and provenance complete the picture.

Three eras
Rolex moved from sequential numbers to letter prefixes and later to randomised alphanumeric serials. The system determines how precisely a production period can be estimated.
Numeric sequences can indicate an approximate production year, although the mid-century reset creates overlapping numbers.
Prefixes including R, L, E, A, P, K, Y, F, D, Z, M, V and G indicate an approximate production period.
Modern eight-character serials cannot be reliably decoded into a production year from the number alone.
Finding the number
The location depends on the age of the watch. Avoid removing a bracelet unless you have the correct tools and experience, as the lugs can easily be marked.
The serial is traditionally engraved at six o'clock, behind the bracelet. The reference is normally found at twelve o'clock.
On later models, the serial is engraved on the inner flange between the dial and crystal, usually aligned at six o'clock.
The serial should also appear on the original guarantee papers or warranty card. Check that it matches the watch.
Collector methodology
The serial dates the case. The watch tells the rest.
Rolex has not published a public serial-to-year database. W&B therefore gives a conservative production period where recognised collector sources differ.

After the original sequence approached one million, Rolex restarted the numbering. Many six-digit serials can therefore correspond to two possible periods. The finder reports both where appropriate. Interior case-back marks and reference-specific details may help narrow the result.
Common questions
A serial number is useful evidence, but it is not a complete authenticity or originality check.
No. Counterfeit or altered watches can carry plausible numbers. Authentication requires examination of the complete watch, including the case, dial, movement and components.
Rolex began phasing in randomised eight-character serial numbers around 2009–2010. Unlike earlier serials, these cannot be reliably decoded to determine a production year from the number alone.
No. A watch may have remained with a distributor or retailer before being sold. The papers record the retail event, while the serial provides an estimate of the case-production period.
The available charts are collector-compiled rather than an official Rolex production database. Production boundaries overlap, components could be held before assembly and published estimates can differ by one or two years.
Not by itself. Dials, hands, bezels and bracelets may be period-correct, later service replacements or fitted at another point in the watch's life. These require separate reference-specific analysis.
