Valentinian Solidus, 364-375 AD, Antioch Mint (ANTS), 4.3g, Roman Empire Gold Coin
Gold solidus from the reign of Emperor Valentinian, minted between 364-375 AD at the Antioch mint (ANTS). This 4.3-gram coin is a beautifully preserved piece of Roman history, showcasing the emperor’s portrait and imperial titles.
Obverse: Displays the bust of Valentinian, diademed and draped, with the inscription “D N VALENTINI P F AVG”, signifying his role as the “Pious and Fortunate Augustus.”
Reverse: Features the emperor standing and holding a labarum (military standard) with Victory perched on a globe, accompanied by the inscription “RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE” (Restorer of the Republic). The ANTS mint mark at the bottom indicates its production at the renowned Antioch mint.
General condition:
The coin features a well-preserved bust of Emperor Valentinian, showing surface wear on the emperor’s face and around the diadem.
Minor wear is visible on the inscription, particularly around the “VALENTINI” portion, but it remains legible.
A few faint hairline scratches are present on the shoulder and around the neckline area.
The reverse shows the emperor holding a labarum and Victory on a globe. There is considerable wear on the standing figure, particularly on the lower body and the staff, though the design remains legible.
The inscription “RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE” is preserved, but some letters near the bottom show softening due to wear.
The surface of the reverse has scratches near the emperor’s legs and torso from handling and light circulation.
Bent Section: The coin shows a noticeable bend along the rim, which is particularly visible when viewed edge-on. This bend affects the overall circularity of the coin, causing a slight curvature on one side.
Wear: The bent section has caused some additional wear along the rim in that area. The metal appears slightly flattened where the bend is most pronounced, indicating stress during handling or a potential impact over time.
Minor Nick: Along the rim, near the bent area, a small nick can be seen, possibly caused by the same impact that bent the coin.
