The Patek 5160 is a bit of an outlier. It is neither from Patek’s famous ranges like the Nautilus or the Calatrava nor does it enjoy the star appeal of something like the sky moon tourbillon.

Being essentially a hand engraved version of the 5159 it shares the same dimensions of a 38 mm diameter. Accordingly, it also shares the same calibre 324 S QR which features a perpetual calendar complete with indicators for the day, date, month, moon face and leap year.

The true highlight here is the floral engraving, which as per usual with Patek hasn’t just chosen at random. This style of particular engraving is nicknamed “the Packard” after James Ward Packard, an industrialist who commissioned in 1927 what was then the most complicated pocket watch in the world coming with said engraving. The hand engraving was carried all over the case and even on to the opaline dial where it adds a subtle texture to the face.

The attention to detail is carried onto elements like the date display which isn’t just a simple window. No, instead what you have on the 5160 is a retrograde hand spanning 240 degrees along the dial and coming with a flyback function to jump back to the left once it has reached the last day of the month on the right side.

Then there is the dial which features both Roman and Arabic numerals in black and blue. Being adapted from original designs of pocket watches this also comes with what is known as an officer’s case back, an engraved sheet of metal which serves as protection for the sapphire case back underneath. The cherry on top of the many unique characteristics of the 5160 is the large central second’s hand which is a true rarity among perpetual calendars, and like the other hands on the dial are made out of black oxidized gold.

The 5160 is a dark horse, a relatively unknown timepiece to the masses whose prominence though becomes apparent to anyone who spends time with it.

This piece was purchased in 2015 and is in unworn conditions with original caseback sticker still on, it comes with all its documentation and pertaining accessories with an additional brown crocodile strap.
