The Omega Speedmaster is considered by many one of the most historically significant watches of our time, also affectionately known as the Speedy with many variations of the model since its delivery in 1957. The model shot to stardom when it was the first watch to be certified “flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions eventually being used in the moon landing in 1969 and later on in the famous Apollo 13 mission in which the Speedmaster’s chronograph function had managed to accurately measure the time required for the Space Shuttle to carry out its Mid-Course Correction.
However, the Mark 40 is a very different watch, it is not a “moon watch” in that it’s not a hand-wound, date-less Speedmaster. The first thing that catches your attention is how colorful the dial is with striking red hands, blue and black subdial, date hand with a yellow plane motif, with tritium patina numerals. The grey dial and contrasting black bezel offer a perfect canvas for the explosion of coloured accents that make this model so distinct.
The watch houses the Omega Calibre 1151 movement that is based on the trusted Valjoux 7751, a movement that has powered so many of the most popular watches of our time. Visually it is far more complicated looking than any other Speedmaster out there. It includes a Day-Date and Month function, a chronograph, a 24-hour indicator and convenient quick set for the radial style date.
Case has all the DNA markings of the Speedmaster within its 39mm dimensions with pump pushers and push down crown making it extremely comfortable and versatile to wear both for day and evening purposes.
The Omega Speedmaster Triple Date is also known as the Schumacher as Michael Schumacher was featured extensively in the advertising of this watch, we have kept it on the original leather strap that was used in the posters which makes for a great pairing for the dial as it comes in black with white stitching. Leather is in crisp condition and will need to be used a few times to break into, this we will let our wearer develop and enjoy.
Watch comes with original documentation, service and purchase history with card stamped from 1998. Alongside its original box which as any fan of Omega will know has aged terribly as boxes from the 90s tended to peal, something that I am glad they have now addressed with the new rubberised leather presentation boxes.
To wrap it up this Speedmaster is inviting, exciting, and significantly different than any chronograph you’ll find in someone’s collection, a modern classic with a lot of features that tick the boxes of what I want in a piece.
