Any watch enthusiast worth their title won’t need a detailed introduction to Patek Philippe. Since 1851, the brand has been pushing the boundaries of watchmaking; pioneering new technologies, breaking ‘most expensive’ records and winning the favours of high profile fans, including a number of different Royal Family members worldwide!
Despite the many different ranges and models Patek Philippe have released in their 3 century history, one range in particular has not only set itself apart, but has maintained its popularity over many decades. The Grand Complications range takes pride in it’s complex and groundbreaking technical prowess gaining thousands of owners and fans along the way. The range has evolved to include many different variants, but in this article we’re going to cover one of the best; the 5270-1R-001. With Patek Philippe newly releasing the model for 2018, let’s break this stunning watch down and explore it’s mastery piece by piece…
Dial
The Grand Complications range is synonymous for it’s detailed and intricate dial functions and the 5270-1R-001 is no exception. Set within a stunning Ebony Black tone, the contrast of the Rose Gold dials and hour markers create a gorgeous balance of design and functionality. Sticking with the common Perpetual Calendar functionality, the 5270-1R-001 retains the Day, Date and Month indicators alongside sleek Stopwatch and Moonphase operators.
As we’ve come to expect from Patek Philippe, the materials used are of the highest quality; whilst we will cover the new Gautte bracelet further on in this article, 18K Rose Gold is used throughout the dial as well as premium grade Sapphire within the Moonphase indicator.
Movement
Under the dial of this watch, the Grand Complications super high standard continues with the powerful CH 29-535 PS Q movement. Packing the Perpetual Calendar functionality, the movement of the 5270-1R-001 incorporates 456 individual parts, 33 different jewels, a Gyromax balance all rounded off with an assured Patek Philippe Hallmark.

The 5270-1R-001 is a manual winding piece, with long lasting power reserves clocking in at up to 65 hours. We all know movements such as these come in a small package but the CH 29-535 PS Q movement is only 7 mm in height with a diameter of 32 mm. The powerful features allow for highly accurate timekeeping to be maintained whilst utilising the instantaneous 30 minute counter.
Bracelet
The previous Grand Complications 5270 models have always been matched alongside a brown Alligator leather strap, but alas, no more! The 5270-1R-001 breaks this mould by incorporating the new and exclusive Goutte bracelet, bringing additional style, class and style to the Grand Complications range. The Bracelet blends effortlessly with the dial, raising the 5270-1R-001 to new heights of luxury.
The intricate Goutte bracelet is made up of 5 rows of droplet shaped links matched perfectly with a fold-over clasp to not only raise the elegance of this piece but to ensure a perfect fit for the lucky owner. The bracelet goes through a unique and painstaking polishing process to ensure the finish is nothing short of perfect, allowing the 5270-1R-001 to truly stand out from the crowd.
