There are plenty of really influential gold Rolex’s that are worth mentioning but are either not part of the main catalogue by means of discontinuation or by Rolex keeping these for their ‘special’ clients.
With that in mind, understand that these vintage Rolex watches will (obviously) not have a retail price, and even the special ones will only have market-value prices.
Reference 1680 – The first Solid Gold Rolex SubmarinerÂ
Released in 1969 (nice) and produced for a glorious decade, the ref. 1680 was the first Submariner to be introduced with a full gold construction, and some people hated it.
To some, this meant the ultimate departure from the ‘real’ Submariner recipe and was blasphemous to some! Personally, I love it. And I’d love to own one too!
Depending on the condition, the dial configuration, and what’s included in the lot, I would be expected to pay anything from $35,000 up to $100,000.
The prices range massively due to the addition of diamonds and the rarity of specific dial configurations (like meters first).
The blue dial option is undoubtedly more desirable, as it is close to the ‘Bluesy’ moniker.
Reference 6542 – The OG Gold GMT MasterÂ
Gold was used quite early in the life of the GMT Master, as we can see full gold options dating as early as 1958.
The ref. 6542 is a full 18K yellow gold GMT Master featuring a burgundy/brown bakelite bezel, Alpha hands, and the famous nipple dial.
These have become increasingly sought-after, and while there are more favourable options out there, a gold ref. 6542 will cost you $100,000 – $200,000.
It’s a whopping price to pay, considering Rolex just released a new full pure gold version.
Reference 6241- The ‘John Mayer Special” Daytona
It’s no secret that pre-owned Rolex watches fetch a considerable markup; time and time again, the Daytona outperforms every other Rolex on the market.
Perhaps one of the most famous gold versions would be the famous John Mayer Special ref. 6241, circa 1969.
This 14K yellow gold version features the classic design we have grown accustomed to, with a thin black bezel accompanied by a black dial and contrasting champagne subregisters, very similar to the Paul Newman Daytona.
It is estimated that merely 300 – 500 of these glorious options were produced, and you can expect to pay upwards of $1 million – no contest.
This is perhaps the most expensive yellow-gold watch with the Rolex name you can purchase.
Reference 116595RBOW – The Full Gold Pave Rainbow DaytonaÂ
From a watch that could be seen as classic and elegant to one that garners its higher prices purely thanks to opulence and Rolex’s liberal use of diamonds. And coloured gems.
Of course, I am talking about the full gold full pave Rainbow Daytona.
This watch has been seen on the wrist of some of the most elite celebrities and features the classic Daytona shape but everything else has been altered.
The lugs, crown guards, bracelet centre links, and dial are all pave-set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The bezel features several rubies, sapphires, and other gems, all arranged in a rainbow effect.
Oh, and the hour markers also feature baguette-cut gemstones.
This is as much gold and gems as you could possibly fit on a Rolex, and whether or not these are a good investment remains to be seen.
That said, you can expect to pay $900,00 for one. There is also another option in white gold (the one I prefer), which has regular bracelet centre links paired with a black diamond-set dial.
This is a far more reserved and (I cannot believe I’m saying this) grownup version of the Rainbow, but will still cost you $400,000.
Is a Gold Rolex a Good Investment?
Well, that really all depends on what the market is going to do. Precious metals have become slightly less favourable options with the rise of stainless steel watches, particularly sports models like the Royal Oak.
That said, as Danny Milton from Hodinkee wrote, the material value of these watches has increased so much over the past few years. Especially after the 2020 boom, you cannot make that decision as easily as you did a few years ago. A Royal Oak is worth the price of a house.
If we look at some trends and stats on watchcharts.com (great site) you’ll find some interesting statistics over the past 6 months:
– Rolex second-hand market sales have dropped by around 5.5%, whereas the overall market has fallen by 7.3%
– The ref. 116508 (Green and Gold Daytona) has dropped by 5.1%
– The ref. 116520 (steel Daytona) has dropped by 8.7% and the 116503 (two-tone Daytona) has dropped by only 6%
– The ref. 126715 (full gold GMT Master II) has dropped by only 1.9% but can be found at retail prices on the second-hand market if you look hard enough
– The ref. 5711/1R (rose gold Nautilus) has dropped by 4.8%, whereas steel variations are dropping by 8 – 9%
– The gold Overseas dropped by 7.3% whereas the steel variation dropped by a whopping 14.1%
All of these statistics would make us believe that precious material watches (barring platinum) are making a slight comeback.
This is really too early to tell, and I am certainly not the person to ask for investing advice, but gold watches might be a good investment.
With the release of cost-effective ‘gold’ options, it has become apparent that gold might be making a comeback.
The world is rich with opulence, and nothing is too grotesque anymore.
Personally, I do not mind gold watches. I like gold watches more than steel alternatives, so, they are not grotesque to me at all.
That said, you judge what is good for you and your life.

Well, firstly, you need to ensure the watch you are buying is one you like.
There are, of course, several different options available all with various benefits and drawbacks. You also have to look at the best price for the watch you are considering and whether the secondary market has something to offer you that will save you money or time.
Size, fit, and finish also play a massive role. If you’re a 6’5” giant, a dainty 34mm Datejust isn’t going to look that great, but a two-tone Sea-Dweller will look the business.

This is probably as close as we’ll ever get to a Vantablack watch dial, and when it contrasts so beautifully against that case, it is something to behold.
Measuring a classic 36mm in diameter and powered by the powerhouse 3155 movement, you get classic proportions and a 48-hour power reserve.
Moreover, you have a ‘Presidential Watch’, seeing as various US presidents have worn the Day-Date. Depending on the quality, you might spend a good $35,000 – $40,000, which is a lot of money!
However, it is a one-watch collection, and when considering this fact, you’ve got to go big.
The Perfect Duo: Rolex Datejust ref. 16018 and Rolex Submariner 126613LNÂ

As the name suggests, the perfect duo is a collection of two watches: something sporty/everyday, a bit dressier, or something that can ride the line between casual and formal.
Rolex has been known to really down on sports models in recent years, but there are still a few gems to highlight.
For your everyday option, I think we have to go with a Datejust ref. 16018. This vintage 36mm Datejust features the famous Jubilee band, a blue dial, and a yellow gold construction.
This is as every day of a gold Rolex as you can find without seeming flashy. It’s a vintage Datejust from the 80s. What’s more to say?
It’s timeless and doubles as our elegant piece when paired with a leather strap. If we’d like to pair that with something to create the perfect duo, we have to with a sporty model.

I went for the black option to set it apart from the blue Datejust, and it’s so unique in its own right!

Conclusion
Gold will never truly go out of style. It’s been part of our lives for thousands of years, and I do not believe it’ll magically disappear based on what the steel sports watch market is doing.
That said, it hasn’t been doing terrific for a few months and is beginning to pick up again now. Plenty of steals are available online if you look hard enough, and that’s a testament to what gold represents.
If you look hard enough, you’ll find gold between the steel. Just make sure you understand that gold ‘reacts’ differently to being worn compared to steel.

But What About Other Gold Rolex Watches
There are plenty of really influential gold Rolex’s that are worth mentioning but are either not part of the main catalogue by means of discontinuation or by Rolex keeping these for their ‘special’ clients.
With that in mind, understand that these vintage Rolex watches will (obviously) not have a retail price, and even the special ones will only have market-value prices.
Reference 1680 – The first Solid Gold Rolex SubmarinerÂ
Released in 1969 (nice) and produced for a glorious decade, the ref. 1680 was the first Submariner to be introduced with a full gold construction, and some people hated it.
To some, this meant the ultimate departure from the ‘real’ Submariner recipe and was blasphemous to some! Personally, I love it. And I’d love to own one too!
Depending on the condition, the dial configuration, and what’s included in the lot, I would be expected to pay anything from $35,000 up to $100,000.
The prices range massively due to the addition of diamonds and the rarity of specific dial configurations (like meters first).
The blue dial option is undoubtedly more desirable, as it is close to the ‘Bluesy’ moniker.
Reference 6542 – The OG Gold GMT MasterÂ
Gold was used quite early in the life of the GMT Master, as we can see full gold options dating as early as 1958.
The ref. 6542 is a full 18K yellow gold GMT Master featuring a burgundy/brown bakelite bezel, Alpha hands, and the famous nipple dial.
These have become increasingly sought-after, and while there are more favourable options out there, a gold ref. 6542 will cost you $100,000 – $200,000.
It’s a whopping price to pay, considering Rolex just released a new full pure gold version.
Reference 6241- The ‘John Mayer Special” Daytona
It’s no secret that pre-owned Rolex watches fetch a considerable markup; time and time again, the Daytona outperforms every other Rolex on the market.
Perhaps one of the most famous gold versions would be the famous John Mayer Special ref. 6241, circa 1969.
This 14K yellow gold version features the classic design we have grown accustomed to, with a thin black bezel accompanied by a black dial and contrasting champagne subregisters, very similar to the Paul Newman Daytona.
It is estimated that merely 300 – 500 of these glorious options were produced, and you can expect to pay upwards of $1 million – no contest.
This is perhaps the most expensive yellow-gold watch with the Rolex name you can purchase.
Reference 116595RBOW – The Full Gold Pave Rainbow DaytonaÂ
From a watch that could be seen as classic and elegant to one that garners its higher prices purely thanks to opulence and Rolex’s liberal use of diamonds. And coloured gems.
Of course, I am talking about the full gold full pave Rainbow Daytona.
This watch has been seen on the wrist of some of the most elite celebrities and features the classic Daytona shape but everything else has been altered.
The lugs, crown guards, bracelet centre links, and dial are all pave-set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The bezel features several rubies, sapphires, and other gems, all arranged in a rainbow effect.
Oh, and the hour markers also feature baguette-cut gemstones.
This is as much gold and gems as you could possibly fit on a Rolex, and whether or not these are a good investment remains to be seen.
That said, you can expect to pay $900,00 for one. There is also another option in white gold (the one I prefer), which has regular bracelet centre links paired with a black diamond-set dial.
This is a far more reserved and (I cannot believe I’m saying this) grownup version of the Rainbow, but will still cost you $400,000.
Is a Gold Rolex a Good Investment?
Well, that really all depends on what the market is going to do. Precious metals have become slightly less favourable options with the rise of stainless steel watches, particularly sports models like the Royal Oak.
That said, as Danny Milton from Hodinkee wrote, the material value of these watches has increased so much over the past few years. Especially after the 2020 boom, you cannot make that decision as easily as you did a few years ago. A Royal Oak is worth the price of a house.
If we look at some trends and stats on watchcharts.com (great site) you’ll find some interesting statistics over the past 6 months:
– Rolex second-hand market sales have dropped by around 5.5%, whereas the overall market has fallen by 7.3%
– The ref. 116508 (Green and Gold Daytona) has dropped by 5.1%
– The ref. 116520 (steel Daytona) has dropped by 8.7% and the 116503 (two-tone Daytona) has dropped by only 6%
– The ref. 126715 (full gold GMT Master II) has dropped by only 1.9% but can be found at retail prices on the second-hand market if you look hard enough
– The ref. 5711/1R (rose gold Nautilus) has dropped by 4.8%, whereas steel variations are dropping by 8 – 9%
– The gold Overseas dropped by 7.3% whereas the steel variation dropped by a whopping 14.1%
All of these statistics would make us believe that precious material watches (barring platinum) are making a slight comeback.
This is really too early to tell, and I am certainly not the person to ask for investing advice, but gold watches might be a good investment.
With the release of cost-effective ‘gold’ options, it has become apparent that gold might be making a comeback.
The world is rich with opulence, and nothing is too grotesque anymore.
Personally, I do not mind gold watches. I like gold watches more than steel alternatives, so, they are not grotesque to me at all.
That said, you judge what is good for you and your life.
How to Choose the Perfect Gold Rolex to Buy in 2023
Well, firstly, you need to ensure the watch you are buying is one you like.
There are, of course, several different options available all with various benefits and drawbacks. You also have to look at the best price for the watch you are considering and whether the secondary market has something to offer you that will save you money or time.
Size, fit, and finish also play a massive role. If you’re a 6’5” giant, a dainty 34mm Datejust isn’t going to look that great, but a two-tone Sea-Dweller will look the business.
Let’s create two scenarios (as we so often do around here!) for three individuals looking to build their collection(s): a one-watch collection and the perfect duo.
One-Watch Collection: Rolex Day-Date ref. 18238
This yellow gold Day-Date dates back to the late 70s and is often referred to as the ‘Onyx’ Day-Date due to the use of the stark black onyx dial.
This is probably as close as we’ll ever get to a Vantablack watch dial, and when it contrasts so beautifully against that case, it is something to behold.
Measuring a classic 36mm in diameter and powered by the powerhouse 3155 movement, you get classic proportions and a 48-hour power reserve.
Moreover, you have a ‘Presidential Watch’, seeing as various US presidents have worn the Day-Date. Depending on the quality, you might spend a good $35,000 – $40,000, which is a lot of money!
However, it is a one-watch collection, and when considering this fact, you’ve got to go big.
The Perfect Duo: Rolex Datejust ref. 16018 and Rolex Submariner 126613LNÂ

As the name suggests, the perfect duo is a collection of two watches: something sporty/everyday, a bit dressier, or something that can ride the line between casual and formal.
Rolex has been known to really down on sports models in recent years, but there are still a few gems to highlight.
For your everyday option, I think we have to go with a Datejust ref. 16018. This vintage 36mm Datejust features the famous Jubilee band, a blue dial, and a yellow gold construction.
This is as every day of a gold Rolex as you can find without seeming flashy. It’s a vintage Datejust from the 80s. What’s more to say?
It’s timeless and doubles as our elegant piece when paired with a leather strap. If we’d like to pair that with something to create the perfect duo, we have to with a sporty model.
For that, might I suggest the 126613LN, the modern two-tone Submariner Date?
I went for the black option to set it apart from the blue Datejust, and it’s so unique in its own right!
You probably won’t see a ton of these in public, and it’s something that can be worn pretty much anywhere and won’t look out of place. This collection will cost you around $12,000 and $18,000 respectively.
Conclusion
Gold will never truly go out of style. It’s been part of our lives for thousands of years, and I do not believe it’ll magically disappear based on what the steel sports watch market is doing.
That said, it hasn’t been doing terrific for a few months and is beginning to pick up again now. Plenty of steals are available online if you look hard enough, and that’s a testament to what gold represents.
If you look hard enough, you’ll find gold between the steel. Just make sure you understand that gold ‘reacts’ differently to being worn compared to steel.
Gold is slightly more fragile and, above all, will catch the eyes of everyone – even the bad guys – so be careful out there…Â
