Functions

Date, GMT

Do you ever wonder why the iconic Rolex pilots watch is called GMT-Master II and not simply GMT-Master? Well, because there used to be a GMT-Master before it. Today we get to show you a reference 16700, the last original GMT-Master before they all slowly got phased out and replaced with their newer iterations. At the core of all these naming complications is the calibre 3175 that drives the watch which had a non-independent hour hand allowing for only two time zones compared to the theoretically three possible time zones possible on the GMT II.

This reference number was produced from 1988 to 1999, with this specific model being from 1989 which means it still has the vintage open numbers on the date-wheel which were produced until 1992/1993. Also iconic for this time period are the tritium lume marked by the T< 25 on the dial which was made to 1997 which we should expect to develop some nice patina as this watch keeps ticking. While it does feature only two time zones this model is fairly modern in the bigger picture, featuring an updated case, a sapphire crystal, and white gold indexes which are now essential to all modern Rolex.

With the success of the new Pepsi, these older models will be sure to gain in popularity even more and this 16700 is no exception. While it does not have it’s original Papers the overall condition of the watch is great. Both case and the bracelet are free from any scratches or the like and show little to no wear with the watch having received a light polish. Summed up this watch is a carefree package delivering a smile to anyone lucky enough to call it their own. As one of the last original GMT-Masters, it offers some historical context while still having retained its youth by virtue of the many modern features which helped make Rolex the desirable brand that they are today.
